This out-of-the-ordinary tour will take you from Buenos Aires, Argentina through Bolivia to Lima, Peru in a 20-day, once-in-a-lifetime adventure! This is our last trip on the traditional Andean Explorer Train from Puno to Cusco
We will take travelers from the iconic city of Buenos Aires to Tucuman, from where we visit the famous wine region of Cafayate. You will continue the journey through the incredible landscape of the Uyuni Salt Flats to La Paz in Bolivia. We then continue into Peru to Lake Titicaca and the wonder of the world known as Machu Picchu and beyond.
This journey brings you to many of the region’s must-see sites, but you’ll also explore some tourist destinations that are frequently omitted from most other mainstream tours, including Cafayate, the Quebrada de Humahuaca, Uyuni and Lake Titicaca, among others.

1st Day, Sunday: Arrival in Buenos Aires
Welcome to Buenos Aires. Our driver welcomes you at the Ezeiza International Airport and drives you to the 4* Hotel Rochester Classic. For the rest of the day, you have free time.
2nd Day, Monday: Buenos Aires City Tour
Discover the most important neighborhoods and landmarks in Buenos Aires during a half-day city tour. Admire the Obelisk, the symbol of Buenos Aires, and the many open squares of colonial Spanish descent. The visit to La Boca neighborhood and a walk on the “Caminito Street” are other highlights of the tour. In the evening, we celebrate our welcome dinner at the Tango show of “El Querandi”. You’ll then spend the night at the Hotel Rochester Classic. (B/D)
3rd Day, Tuesday: El Tigre River Cruise
You board the boat at Puerto Madero and head to Tigre. The cruise goes along the Costanera Navigation Canal, parallel to the Buenos Aires shoreline, passing the River Plate Stadium and the University of Buenos Aires. Then, we cruise through the canals of the delta, one of the largest in the world. We have lunch before heading to the Tigre train station, where we will take a train back to the city of Buenos Aires. You spend the night at the 4* Rochester Classic Hotel. (B/L)
4th Day, Wednesday: Tucuman – Cafayate
Transfer to the airport in Buenos Aires and fly to Tucuman in North Western, Argentina. After a short panoramic city tour in Tucuman we continue our journey to Cafayate. We continue the journey through the Calaqui Valley. After Colalao del Valle we reach Cafayate, famous for its excellent wines. Lastly, we check into the Hotel Casa de la Bodega where we stay overnight. (B/L/D)
5th Day, Thursday: Cafayate
We visit the Piatelli Winery in the outskirts of Cafayate. The surroundings are known for their rugged landscapes, striking red rock formations and high-altitude vineyards. In the afternoon we return to our Hotel Casa de la Bodega where we stay overnight. (B/L)
6th Day, Friday: Cafayate – Salta
We leave Cafayate in the morning following the Rio Las Conchas towards Salta. We check into the Hotel Salta. In the afternoon we start our city tour in Salta. Overnight we stay at the Hotel Salta in Salta. (B/L)
7th Day, Saturday: Salta
You enjoy a free day in Salta. (B)
8th Day, Sunday: Salta – Quebrada Humahuaca
North of Salta lies the Quebrada de Humahuaca, an UNESCO listed valley. The valley is characterized by steep rock faces that change colors constantly depending on the hour of the day and from where you view them. Authentic dusty indigenous villages are spread along the route north. We stay overnight at the Hotel Huacalera. (B/L/D)
9th Day, Monday: Huacalera – Wara Wara Express to Uyuni
Early morning, we continue the route no 9 to the north to reach the Bolivian border before midday. If time permits, we do a short tour of Villazon before we board the “Wara Wara Express” to Uyuni. The train reaches Uyuni early morning. A local guide welcomes us at the railway station and brings us to the Hotel Palacio de Sal in Colchani, where we spend the rest of the night. (B/L /D)
10th Day, Tuesday: Uyuni
We visit the train cemetery in Uyuni, where we explore various oxidized steam engines and wagons on this spectacular site surrounded by amazingly unique scenery. In Colchani, we visit an artisanal salt processing plant and witness traditional salt extraction methods. At the Incahuasi Island (known as Fisher Island) in the middle of the world’s largest salt flat, you see amazing giant cactus. Lunch will be served in the middle of the salt flat. Overnight you’ll stay at the Hotel Palacio de Sal. (B, L, D)
11th Day, Wednesday: Uyuni – La Paz
In the morning, we drive to a place where you can watch salt excavation. We visit a viewpoint above Coquesa Village from where you have fantastic views over the salt flat. Lunch is a Picnic on the central square in Coquesa. We drive over the salt flat to the Uyuni Airport, then take the evening flight to La Paz. In La Paz we stay at the Hotel Europa. (B, L, D)
12th Day, Thursday: La Paz
We do a tour in this fascinating city. Discover the indigenous Cosmo-vision and their mystical rituals at the Witches Market. The San Francisco Church, the historical district around the main square and the “Plaza Murillo” with the Legislative and the Government Palace are other sights of interest that we visit. Enjoy breathtaking views of La Paz from the Killi Killi viewpoint. We’ll return to the hotel in the afternoon. (B/L)
13th Day, Friday: La Paz
You have a free day, and stay overnight at the Hotel Europa in La Paz. (B)
14th Day, Saturday: Copacabana – Puno
From La Paz, we travel to Copacabana, a small town on the Bolivian side of the Lake Titicaca. Stroll through Copacabana’s handicraft stalls and food markets. In the afternoon, we cross the border to Peru. Here, we have to change our vehicle. We reach Puno in the evening and stay at the Hotel Jose Antonio overnight. (B/D)
15th Day, Sunday: Lake Titicaca
We cruise the highest navigable lake in the world. The first stop is at the Floating Islands of Uros, where we visit an Aymara community who introduce us to their traditions. Then the cruise continues to Taquile Island. On this mountainous island, we have a typical lunch before the cruise returns to Puno. We stay overnight at the Hotel Jose Antonio near Puno. (B, L)
16th Day, Monday: “Andean Explorer” Puno – Cusco
Early morning, we head to the Puno Railway station and board the “Andean Explorer Train” that brings us to Cusco. This fascinating journey goes through a scenic high Andean countryside. The train travels the 281 km (175 Mi) to Cusco in about 10 hours. In La Raya, the train reaches its highest point at 4.321 meters (15177 ft.) above sea level. The downhill train ride to Cusco goes through endless pastures and calls at remote villages, reaching Cusco in the evening. The driver awaits us at the railway station and brings us to the Hotel San Antonio el Dorado in Cusco where we stay overnight. (B/L)
17th Day, Tuesday: Cusco
City tour in the morning. One of the highlights is the Santo Domingo Convent, which is built over an ancient Inca Palace. Outside of Cusco, we visit the Inca military fortress Sacsayhuaman. Later, we have a look at the Inca ruins of Qenko, Puca-Pucara and Tambomachay. In the afternoon, we go to Ollantaytambo where we board the train to Aguas Calientes, which is where we stay overnight. 18th Day, Wednesday: Machu Picchu
With an expert guide we explore Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas. Take your time to explore Machu Picchu at your own leisure after the guided tour. You eat lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge. We then return to Ollantaytambo with the train in the afternoon and continue the journey by bus to Cusco. Overnight, we stay at the Hotel San Antonio el Dorado in Cusco. (B, L)
19th Day, Thursday: Cusco – Lima
We transfer to the airport in Cusco to board the flight to Lima, then transfer to the Hotel Sonesta Posada del Inca in Lima’s Miraflores district. Enjoy an interesting city tour of Lima’s colonial past. Discover the Plaza San Martin and the Plaza Mayor with the Government Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace and the Cathedral. We drive through the modern district of San Isidro and Miraflores on our way back to the hotel. During the city tour we invite you to our farewell lunch at the Larco Museum. You’ll spend the night at the Hotel Sonesta Posada del Inca. (B/L)
20st Day, Friday: Departure
Morning at leisure. At the agreed time, our guide transfers you to the international airport in time to board the flight back to your home country. (B)

BUENOS AIRES: The Hotel Rochester Classic is an excellent 3* Hotel located in the shopping district of “La Florida” in Buenos Aires. The hotel offers all the amenities you expect from such a hotel. The hotel has a gym, bar, a vanguard lobby and comfortable guest rooms. Many shops and restaurants are nearby.
CAFAYATE: The Hotel Casa de la Bodega is a wonderful country inn in the midst the Cafayate vineyards. The hotel has its wine cellar where wine degustations can be organized. The hotel is well known for its excellent cuisine. The hotel offers all the amenities you expect from such a hotel with comfortable guest rooms and free WI-FI.
SALTA: The Hotel Salta is located in Salta’s city center in a corner of the Plaza 9 de Julio. Many restaurants, museums, and other tourist attractions can be reached on foot. The hotel offers an excellent Breakfast, Free Wifi and a beautiful garden with a small open air swimming pool. where you can relax after a busy day visiting Salta.
HUACALERA: The Hotel Huacalera is a historical hotel in the middle of the famous “Qebrada de Humahuaca”. All rooms have a modern design that contrasts with the old building. The hotel is the perfect accommodation choice after a visit of the Quebrada de Humahuaca on our journey to Bolivia.
UYUNI SALT FLAT: The Hotel Palacio de Sal is a rustic, fantastic hotel on the shores of the Uyuni Salt Flat. The nearby village of Colchani and the proximity of the salt flat add a special touch to this magical place, you will never forget. The Hotel has comfortable double rooms, all with private showers and toilets and an excellent restaurant.
LA PAZ: The Hotel Europa is one of the best hotels in La Paz. It is located on a side street from El Prado, La Paz’s main boulevard. The modern hotel has Free Wifi, an excellent rooftop bar and a few very good restaurants and bars nearby. The rooms are comfortable with spectacular views over the city.
LAKE TITICACA: From the Hotel Jose Antonio you have breathtaking views over the Lake Titicaca. The hotel is located a few miles south of Puno, near the shores of this breathtaking lake. Besides the views, the hotel has an excellent restaurant. There are no restaurants and shops nearby.
CUSCO: The Hotel Eco Inn in Cusco is located at a few paths from the famous Korikancha. The hotel has a good buffet breakfast and simple, but comfortable rooms. The historical center of Cusco is about 5 walking minutes away. Many restaurants and shops are nearby the hotel.
MACHU PICCHU: From the Hotel San Antonio Classic in Aguas Calientes is it a short walk to the buses to Machu Picchu. Restaurants and shops are in easy walking distance. The hotel is not far from the railway station, that makes it easy to leave the luggage at the hotel and pick it up at our return before we take the train to Cusco.
LIMA: The Hotel San Agustin Exclusive is located in Lima’s Miraflores district. Many street coffees, restaurants and shops are in walking distance of the hotel. The Barranco from where you have spectacular view over the Pacific Ocean is a few blocks away. The hotel is an excellent base to explore the fascinating city of Lima.
